Exhibition: The Dress Makes the Man

Plats: Textilmuseet

The exhibition The Dress Makes the Man, Haute Couture – A New Era takes us behind the scenes of a prestigious fashion genre undergoing radical transformation.

At the haute couture houses in Paris, hand-sewn fashion is created at the highest artistic level. Traditionally, couture has been exclusively aimed at women, but today, it is a craft genre in radical change. Once associated with a classic women’s wardrobe and a bygone era, today’s haute couture is more about breaking norms and being expressive.

Stockholm-based Fredrik Robertsson is one of the few men in the world to have entered the salons of haute couture as a client. With his extravagant, gender-transcending aesthetic, he has become a style icon and muse for creators worldwide. He is a pioneer at a time when the polarization between masculine and feminine in fashion is being questioned – and the dress is moving forward in the men’s wardrobe.

The exhibition is based on a selection from Fredrik Robertsson’s growing collection of contemporary haute couture and experimental craft fashion. All garments are handmade and tailored specifically for his body. Photographer Ea Czyz has followed Fredrik Robertsson in Paris, documenting a closed world. The photographs offer a glimpse into a new, explosive era for haute couture.

The Dress Makes the Man, Haute Couture – A New Era is curated by Susanna Strömquist in collaboration with Fredrik Robertsson and was previously shown at Liljevalchs+. The exhibition design is by Robin Grann.

The exhibition catalog, with the same title, is written by Susanna Strömquist, featuring essays by Maria Ben Saad from Beckmans College of Design and Madison Moore from Brown University. Graphic design by Robin Grann, photos by Ea Czyz and Vanessa Tryde.
