Sven Fristedt – Master of Patterns
Plats: Textilmuseet
Sven Fristedt is one of the most prolific and beloved textile designers of our time. Over several decades, he has created patterns for companies like Borås Wäfveri AB and IKEA, as well as for several collections by Katja of Sweden. His distinctive design language resonates with many, and his original and characteristic patterns have adorned curtains, sofas, tablecloths, and duvet covers in countless homes.
During the golden age of the Swedish textile industry in the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s, fabrics with Sven Fristedt’s patterns were exported worldwide. Today, there is a renewed interest in retro fabrics, and these industrially produced textiles have become part of a modern textile cultural heritage.
Born in 1940, Sven Fristedt has lived and worked in Skåne since his twenties. Kulturen in Lund has produced a large retrospective exhibition on his long and extensive artistic career, from his first pattern for the textile industry in the late 1950s to the present day. The selection and content have been developed in close collaboration with the artist. In addition to many of his prints for industrial production, the exhibition also features unique objects and sculptures, as well as newly made hand-printed works created at Konstnärernas Kollektivverkstad in Malmö. Sketches and materials that have inspired him offer a glimpse into the artistic process.
Everyday design is an important part of people’s lives. This exhibition highlights the central role of designers in shaping our everyday products and tells the story of the Swedish textile industry.
